How to Print Malay, Chinese, Tamil or Jawi Text on T-Shirts

Prepare multilingual T-shirt text without missing characters, font substitutions or approval errors using a practical Malaysian artwork workflow.

The short answer: lock the exact wording first, choose fonts that contain every required character, check shaping and reading order in the final design application, then send the printer an approved PDF or outlined vector file together with an editable master kept by your team. A multilingual design is not ready merely because every line looks correct in a message or browser.

Malay in Latin script, Chinese characters, Tamil and Jawi do not all use the same letterforms or layout behaviour. Treat each language version as controlled artwork with a named reviewer, not as decorative filler that the printer can retype from a screenshot.

The same workflow applies whether the design contains a short event phrase, staff names, a school slogan or several language versions.

Lock the words before choosing the typeface

Create one copy master that preserves the exact characters. Include:

  • the language and script for each line;
  • required capitalisation, punctuation and line breaks;
  • whether names or phrases may be shortened;
  • the source or authorised person who supplied the wording;
  • the fluent reviewer responsible for approval; and
  • a version number and approval date.

Do not ask the printer to copy text from a low-resolution image, social post or voice note. Do not retype approved Chinese, Tamil or Jawi copy into a different application without comparing it character by character.

When copy moves through a digital text workflow, use a Unicode-capable format. The W3C recommends UTF-8 for multilingual content because it can represent mixtures of languages, but correct encoding alone does not guarantee that a font contains or correctly shapes every character.

Test the font with the complete final text

A font name is not proof of script coverage. The W3C notes that a character can exist in Unicode while the selected font lacks the glyph needed to display it. Software may show a blank box or silently use a fallback font with different weight, width and style.

Paste every final line into the actual design file and check:

  1. no blank boxes, replacement marks or visibly mismatched fallback characters appear;
  2. every diacritic and punctuation mark is present;
  3. the longest line fits without forced compression;
  4. bold, italic or alternate weights still contain the required characters; and
  5. small counters and fine strokes remain open at the intended print size.

One compatible type family is convenient, but separate typefaces can be better when each script needs proper forms and comfortable proportions. Match their visual weight and hierarchy rather than forcing one incomplete font across the whole design.

The Google Fonts catalogue is one source of open-source fonts permitted for commercial projects. Availability there still does not prove that a chosen family covers your exact characters, so test the final copy and check the specific font licence.

Review shaping and reading order in the final application

Some scripts require more than placing independent characters side by side. The W3C explains that Arabic and Indic scripts need additional shaping rules to turn stored characters into the appropriate displayed glyphs. That matters for Jawi, which uses the Arabic script, and for Tamil.

Use design software that supports the required script and direction. Then ask a fluent reviewer to inspect:

  • joined and unjoined forms;
  • character order and punctuation;
  • line direction and alignment;
  • line breaks and spacing; and
  • any mixed-script line containing names, dates or numbers.

Do not rebuild connected script as separate manually positioned symbols. It is difficult to edit safely and can preserve a visually plausible but linguistically wrong result.

Keep an editable master before outlining text

Outlining turns text into vector shapes, which prevents a missing font from changing the approved appearance on the printer’s computer. Adobe’s Create Outline guidance also makes the trade-off clear: outlined text loses normal text properties and can no longer be edited as live type.

Use a two-file handoff:

  1. Editable master: live text, named fonts, locked copy and reviewer notes.
  2. Production file: approved PDF or vector artwork with text outlined when the printer requests it.

Check the font licence before sharing files

Font software has licence terms separate from the words you typeset. Do not attach a font file to the printer merely because it exists on your computer. Confirm whether the licence allows transfer to a service provider, or use an approved production file that does not require the printer to install it.

If the printer must edit live text, agree on a font that both parties may lawfully use. Record the font family and version because a similarly named release can have different glyph coverage or metrics.

Approve the actual size and garment

Screen zoom can hide weak strokes and tight spacing. Print a paper proof at the final physical dimensions, then check a representative decorated sample when the wording is important, small or unfamiliar to the production team.

Review:

  • the smallest character and thinnest stroke;
  • spacing inside and between characters;
  • contrast against the selected garment colour;
  • distortion across seams, stretch or folds;
  • all language versions, not only the English line; and
  • the smallest and largest garment sizes if artwork is scaled.

Send a quotation-ready artwork brief

Tell each printer the garment, colour, quantity, print positions, final artwork dimensions, languages and scripts, number of text versions, decoration method, proof requirement, sample requirement, approval owner and required receipt date. State whether the file is outlined and whether any licensed live font will be supplied.

Frequently asked questions

Can a printer type Chinese, Tamil or Jawi text for me?

A printer may offer artwork help, but you should supply the exact approved wording and appoint a fluent reviewer. Confirm the final characters, line order, punctuation and layout on a proof before production.

Does converting text to outlines prevent font problems?

Outlining preserves the visible letter shapes and removes dependence on the printer having the same font, but it also makes normal text editing unavailable. Keep an editable master and approve the spelling before outlining.
