DTF Printing Malaysia: When It Works Best for Custom T-Shirts

Direct to film, usually shortened to DTF, is one of the most flexible ways to print custom shirts. A design is printed onto transfer film, coated with adhesive powder, cured and then pressed onto the garment with heat.

The method suits buyers who need detailed colour, several shirt materials or a relatively small order without paying for separate screens.

When DTF is a strong choice

DTF is worth considering when your order includes:

• Full-colour artwork, gradients or fine details
• Names and numbers that change between shirts
• A small or medium quantity
• Cotton, polyester, blends or mixed garment types
• A short repeat run using the same artwork

For a one-colour design in a large quantity, silk screen printing may still be more economical. For a photographic image on cotton where a very soft feel matters, DTG can also be worth comparing.

What good DTF should look and feel like

A finished transfer should have clean edges, solid colour and consistent adhesion. It will sit on top of the fabric, so it should not feel exactly like dyed cloth. However, it should remain flexible rather than stiff or brittle.

Ask for a physical sample if the design covers a large area. A large solid rectangle can feel warmer and heavier than several small design elements, even when both use the same process.

Artwork and colour preparation

Provide the printer with a vector file or a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background. Confirm the finished print width in centimetres instead of saying only “large” or “A4 size”.

Colours on a phone or laptop can differ from printed ink. If a brand colour is important, provide its Pantone or CMYK reference and approve a test print before production.

Durability and washing

Durability depends on the transfer, curing temperature, pressure and washing habits. Turn the shirt inside out, use a gentle wash and avoid ironing directly on the print. Do not judge the process only by a newly pressed sample. Ask whether the factory performs wash tests for regular production.
